Aiden had dispatched his brothers on errands. Erik was delivering Harperâs electronics to Nick at Veritas. Drake, the brother who could convince anyone of anything, was meeting the super to convince him that their locksmith was capable of changing the lock. Clay was completing a recon of the neighborhood, and Brandon was assigned to lobby duty.
Leaving Aiden alone with Harper. Not an auspicious beginning, but he didnât want anyone else to review Harperâs schedule.
He took out his highlighters and ran his finger across the column for this week. She had three appearances with her mother at rallyâs in Portland and at the end of the week she was scheduled to go to another rally at the capitol in Salem.
He looked up to find her watching him.
âDonât tell me,â she said. âYouâre going to strike off everything.â
âIâm not that mercenary.â He smiled, but she didnât respond. âWeâll have to evaluate these venues in person, then make a decision.â
âHow to you determine that?â
âExits. Public access. Windows. Manageable crowd size. An area our team can cover and see every inch of the room youâre in. Nothing outside at all.â
She shook her head. âDonât get me wrong. Iâm glad for your thoroughness and appreciate it, but I feel like not only is my whole life being exposed to you, but youâre going to be there every second of every day.â
He looked contrite for a moment then he washed it away. âI promise to let you sleep alone.â He chuckled, and she loved the sound of his laughter.
But she didnât like the route her brain took after his comment. She shouldnât be thinking of him and sleeping in the same sentence.
âOnce we visit these venues and know where youâll be going for the rest of the week, Iâll schedule our team assignments so youâll know who to expect to be with you.â
âYou wonât be here all the time? I mean it felt like you were planning to move in.â She laughed, but he thought it was forced.
âCan I get the addresses for each of these appearances?â
âYes, if I had my phone, but I donât so I can give you the name of the place and weâll have to look it up.â
âOkay. Shoot.â
âFirst one is at the Chinese gardens.â
âInside or outside?â
âIâm not sure. Weâll have to ask my mom.â
âIf itâs outside, Iâd like to rule it out before even going to evaluate the space.â
âI donât mind canceling, but youâll have to be the one to tell my mom.â
âIt canât be that hard.â
âYou met her, right?â Harper shook her head. âOnce she gets something into her mind she doesnât let it go until she makes it happen. Like becoming governor. At first I thought she was crazy, but then I thought about it and knew she would accomplish it. And she did.â
âI have to admit not being up on politics and donât know her political background.â
âShe had none. Like zero other than as a college student and intern. She met my dad on a campaign and married him.
